It is common for employers to request for references during job interviews. The fact they are asking you for references to check for your past experience is one step closer in getting a job. This also shows their seriousness in you as future employee. Since most of the employers ask for the references it becomes important for job seekers to plan ahead and get references in order.

It is advisable to invest time on this subject and get good references. If your reference is at higher position it creates good impression on your resume. The word coming from that person installs confidence in hiring manager. Before you put references on your resume talk to each individual and take their permission for using their name. Also let them know that they will be receiving calls from hiring manager.

The people you should be asking for references are your managers under them you worked, your customers/vendors or your co-workers. For the first time job seekers fresh from college should get references from their professors.

When I was looking job 20 years ago I started collecting reference letters from my past employers. I even requested my customers to provide me appreciation letters. I would keep all appreciation and references letters nicely in a binder along with resume. Presenting your papers in a binder to hiring manager makes good impression.

One good thing you should do is update your references with your job progress. Each time you attend the interview let them know who will be calling for references. Just being extra prepare for interview helps in getting a good job.
